چکیده

i-i E1IE HAVE BEEN a number of reports iii the literature regarding the use of surface active agents in zone electrophoretic studies of 1)100(1 serum proteins and hpoprotems. Ardr (1) found that cationic detergents formed, with serum protenis, complexes that migrated like $-lipoproteins, while aiiionic detergents formed complexes that clectrophoretically resembled -1ipoproteins. More recently, (irundy, J)obson, and Griffin (2) found that an anionic detergent, Lakeseal, caused an increased migration rate toward the anode of both and $-hpoprotenis, while a cationic detergent, beuzalkoniurn chloride, decrease(l migration toWar(l the anode and even caused the lipoprotems to move toWar(l the catho(le. They found that Tween 80, a nonionic surfactant, stopped lipoprotein migration completely. Grundv et a!. added the surfactants to the serum before electrophoresis and their results may not he comparable with those obtained where the materials were added to the buffer. ,J encks quoted by l)urrum (3) studied a number of nonionic surfactaiits. He concluded that these substances (limuhished the adsorption of alJ)unhin Oil l)ape1 hut obscured the protein-lipide relationship ut serum. Both I )owns et a!. (4) and Lloyd and Stewart (5), using Sterox SE and Lubiol \V, respectivel, found improved separations and increased numbers of protein or lipoprotein l)ahlds as a result of adding these compounds to the buffer.

Alkyl Ethoxylated and Alkylphenol Ethoxylated Nonionic Surfactants: Interaction with Bioactive Compounds and Biological Effects

Nonionic surfactants are amphipathic molecules consisting of a hydrophobic (alkylated phenol derivatives, fatty acids, longchain linear alcohols, etc.) and a hydrophilic part (generally ethylene oxide chains of various length). Although not as important commercially, tertiary amine and various sugar surfactants are also nonionic surfactants. Due to their favorable physicochemical properties, no...

Effects of Nonionic Surfactants on Xanthan Gum Production: a Survey on Cellular Interactions

Background: Xanthomonas campestris is a biopolymer producing gram negative bacterium. Production of xanthan biopolymer can be affected by different extrinsic factors as well as surfactants. Hitherto, effects of nonionic surfactants on xanthan production have been studied in a limited number of articles. Objective: In the present study, nonionic surfactants...

The Influence of Bicomponent Mixed Surfactants on Drop/Interface Coalescence

Effects of binary mixtures of ionic/nonionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate/2-heptanol or 1-decanol) and nonionic/nonionic surfactants (2-heptnol/1-decanol) on drop/interface coalescence of water drops in a continuous n-heptane phase were examined. The drop size reduced appreciably and the multi-step coalescence was suppressed finally as the concentration of each of the constituting components</em...

Removal of Surfactants from wastewater by Rice Husk

Surfactants are one of the major components (10- 18%) of detergents and household cleaning products and are used in high volumes in developed countries. In the present research work, the ability of rice husk as a low cost adsorbent for anionic and nonionic surfactants in wastewater has been studied. The maximum removal efficiency for anionic surfactants was 97%, in an aqueous solu...

Effects of Several Nonionic and Anionic Surfactants on Cucumber Protoplasts*

The effects of four nonionic and two anionic surfactants on cucumber protoplasts were examined by light and electron microscopy. Two nonionic surfactants, polyoxyethylene (POE) (n=10) nonylphenylether and POE (n=5) laurylether, caused swelling of protoplasts, followed by their bursting. The bursting gave more destructive effects preferentially on lamellar structures of chloroplasts than the swe...
